Denman trustees seek guest-accommodation enforcement resolution

The committee asks its bylaw enforcement coordinator to draft a resolution protecting guest-accommodation practitioners while regulations are reviewed.

The Denman Island Local Trust Committee asks Bylaw Enforcement Coordinator Miles Drew to draft a standing resolution protecting guest-accommodation practitioners from enforcement bylaw actions until the committee reviews current regulations. Drew is scheduled to bring a report to the next committee meeting. 1

The committee defeats a separate motion requesting no bylaw enforcement regarding guest accommodations, other than environmental issues, until the regulations are reviewed. The vote is unanimous. 1

The discussion follows a presentation from Denman WORKS! Economic Enhancement Society requesting amendments to Bylaw No. 186. Simon Palmer, president of the society, says visitor-related economic activity is important for housing caregivers, accommodating visiting family, augmenting income and providing affordable housing. 1

Trustee Graham says community input is necessary and suggests protecting guest-accommodation operators while relevant regulations are reviewed. Trustee Busheikin says wider community consultation is necessary, and Chair Luckham says the broader community’s preferred approach to visitor accommodation issues needs to be considered. 1

The committee also directs staff to research funding for an Affordable Housing Strategy for Denman Island. 1
