The ideas put forward for draft Bylaw No. 207 included identifying access points and routes, reviewing best practices, and considering a development permit area; trustees said they would consider the meeting’s input as they determine next steps before public consultation.[1]

The special meeting on November 3, 2015, was held to hear perspectives on the draft bylaw’s strengths, weaknesses and possible omissions.[1]

The draft was intended to prohibit transit from upland areas or across other areas to reach aquaculture tenures, while allowing vehicles and land-based machinery to operate on the tenured area, Planner Rob Milne said.[1]

Growers raised concerns about access and safety, while representatives of the Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards supported the draft and raised concerns about beach driving and effects on marine life.[1]

Participants also suggested bringing an access map for further discussion, identifying growers who need vehicles and their closest access points, and exploring a shared growers’ boat.[1]
