Denman trustees create Marine Advisory Commission

The Denman Island Local Trust Committee requests staff to create a Marine Advisory Commission and advertise six positions on it. ^[1] The committee also requests staff to advertise four positions on the Advisory Planning Commission. ^[1]

The decision follows a delegation from the Denman Island Marine Stewardship Committee about concerns regarding degradation of the marine environment around Denman Island. ^[1] The delegation requested advocacy for a Marine Protected Area in Baynes Sound, removal of netting used on shellfish tenures, a ban on driving vehicles on the beach and an end to beach modification. ^[1]

The committee also requests staff to amend its Top Priorities List to include a review of associated Land Use Bylaw regulations and actions concerning predator netting on the beach, driving on the foreshore and beach modifications. ^[1]

Trustee Graham suggests the addition of a Marine Advisory Planning Commission, and the committee carries the motion to request staff to create a Marine Advisory Commission. ^[1] The committee decides not to reappoint members to the Transportation Advisory Planning Commission at this time. ^[1]

The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at 10:30 am at the Marcus Isbister Old School Centre. ^[1]
