The Denman Island Local Trust Committee asks staff to draft amendments to Bylaw No. 186 that would restrict all structures in the W3 Zone and ban vehicular driving on the foreshore in that zone. The motion carried on February 26. [1]
The request followed discussion of a Shellfish Farming Regulation Review report from Golder Associates Ltd. The report recommended a collaborative approach, consideration of a Development Permit Area for marine shorelines and legal advice on driving on the beach and beach modification. [1]
The committee did not consider creation of a new Marine Development Permit Area an effective tool for controlling problematic shellfish industry practices. Trustees also discussed legal review, budget information and potential legal expenses. [1]
During the town hall discussion, speakers asked the committee to address predator netting, driving on beaches and beach modification, and to clarify jurisdiction. [1]
The committee also endorsed the amended Denman Island Farm Plan after directing staff to add a photo credit on page six. [1]
