A draft bylaw amendment addressing driving on the foreshore is being sent to Islands Trust staff and the Marine Advisory Planning Commission for review and comment, after the Denman Island Local Trust Committee approved the referral on July 21. [1]
Trustee David Critchley proposed making it explicit that driving on the foreshore is not permitted in various areas. The committee discussed jurisdiction, timing, costs, available resources and the possible bearing of a beach access review. [1]
The Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards asked the committee for a letter supporting restrictions on all but emergency vehicles driving on Denman Island beaches, and for consideration of a bylaw if the existing bylaw could not protect W1 Marine Conservation zones. [1]
Trustees indicated a preference to consider the requested letter after a July 28 meeting with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Trustee Critchley said he intended to attend that meeting and report back to the committee. [1]
The committee also scheduled a public hearing for September 8 for proposed bylaws concerning riparian areas, and advanced separate proposed bylaws concerning a nature reserve and density transfer to a public hearing before its September 8 regular meeting, subject to completion of a restrictive covenant available for public review.
