Denman trustees seek beach-access information before Bylaw 207 next steps

The Denman Island Local Trust Committee directs the Marine Advisory Planning Commission to investigate existing beach accesses, identify growers who use vehicles on the beach and assess whether access points are physically suitable for those growers. The information is intended to help reduce the impact of draft Bylaw No. 207 on shellfish growers. [1]
Trustees previously defeated a motion to direct the commission to investigate and report on improving beach accesses. The later motion, which included the additional details about growers and access-point suitability, carried. [1]
Trustees say they want more information before considering next steps, including input from growers and other groups, further review by the Marine Advisory Planning Commission, research into beach accesses and collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. [1]
The committee also authorizes its chair to write to the BC Ministry of Environment, Ecosystems Protection and Sustainability Branch requesting that Denman Island be excluded from a pesticide-use permit for invasive intertidal cordgrass. The committee cites an ongoing volunteer-based manual-control program under the oversight of a registered professional biologist. [1]
The committee directs staff to bring the proposed bylaw regarding marihuana production back for further consideration after voting to go no further with it at this stage. [1]

DE-2015-094 It was MOVED and SECONDED, that the Denman Island Local Trust Committee direct the Marine Advisory Planning Commission to investigate and report on the possibilities for improving existing beach accesses to reduce the impact of Bylaw No. 207 on shellfish growers such to include: 1) the identification of growers who use vehicles on the beach and 2) the physical suitability of existing access points to provide access to those growers.
