At the October 3 Denman Island Local Trust Committee meeting, one speaker opposed referring proposed Bylaw No. 225 to all aquaculture tenure holders, while another urged trustees to proceed with second reading and adoption.[1]
The first speaker said an information note in the draft already made clear that tenure holders were excluded from the regulation, and suggested sending a letter instead. The speaker also raised concerns about ecosystem management, monitoring and enforcement by industry regulators.[1]
Speaking for the Denman Island Residents Association Marine Guardians Committee, the second speaker said shellfish growers had been consulted and enforcement officers could inspect tenures without driving on the beach. The speaker also said serious harm to fish or fish habitat was occurring.[1]
The minutes record the two speakers’ comments; they do not record a decision on Bylaw No. 225 at that meeting.[1]
