A representative of the Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards told the Local Trust Committee that aquaculture tenure decisions were being made before the committee received notification of applications, according to the November 14 meeting minutes. [1]
The representative also said there were many false aquaculture applications and that the committee should be notified before applications were decided. [1]
A trustee said the committee was receiving timely email responses from Islands Trust staff after staff made technical comments to the appropriate agencies about crown land tenure decision notifications. [1]
At an October meeting, speakers expressed differing views about proposed Bylaw No. 225 and aquaculture. One member of the public said an information note already made clear that tenure holders were excluded from the regulation and raised concerns about industry regulators’ ecosystem management, monitoring and enforcement. [2]
A speaker for the Denman Island Residents Association Marine Guardians Committee urged the committee to proceed with second reading and adoption, saying shellfish growers had been consulted and enforcement officers could inspect tenures without driving on the beach. [2]
