Two speakers at the Denman Island Local Trust Committee’s October meeting took opposing positions on proposed Bylaw No. 225, according to the adopted minutes.[1]
One speaker said an information note in the draft already made clear that tenure holders were excluded from the regulation, and suggested sending a letter instead of referring the bylaw to tenure holders for comment.[1]
A speaker for the Denman Island Residents Association Marine Guardians Committee urged the committee to proceed with second reading and adoption. She said shellfish growers had been consulted and enforcement officers could inspect tenures without driving on the beach.[1]
At the committee’s November meeting, a representative of the Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards expressed concern that tenure decisions were being made before the committee received notice of applications. A trustee said the committee received timely email responses from Islands Trust staff after staff made technical comments to the relevant agencies.[2]
