At the October 3 Local Trust Committee meeting, speakers expressed opposing views about proposed Bylaw No. 225 and shellfish aquaculture. [1]

One member of the public said an information note in the draft bylaw already made clear that tenure holders were excluded from the regulation, and raised concerns about industry regulators’ ecosystem management, monitoring and enforcement. [1]

A speaker for the Denman Island Residents Association Marine Guardians Committee urged the committee to proceed with second reading and adoption. She said shellfish growers had been consulted, enforcement officers could inspect tenures without driving on the beach, and serious harm to fish or fish habitat was occurring. [1]

The minutes record both speakers’ statements; they do not establish the claims as findings. [1]
