Denman LTC defers marine bylaw for further review

Trustees request options on emergency vehicles, ecological projects, boat launching and Fisheries and Oceans access before further consideration.

The Denman Island Local Trust Committee defers further consideration of proposed Bylaw No. 225 until its next meeting after receiving 11 written submissions during the public hearing. ^[1]

The proposed bylaw adds a general prohibition on vehicles and ground-based machinery in the W1, W3 and W4 zones, while noting that licensed aquaculture operations may operate vehicles or machinery according to their licence terms. ^[1]

The committee requests staff to bring forward options addressing emergency vehicles, vehicles used in ecological projects, boat launching and access by Department of Fisheries and Oceans staff. ^[1]

Staff advises that the regulation may be difficult to enforce because there are no full-time enforcement staff on Denman Island, and that Islands Trust bylaw enforcement is generally complaint-based with a goal of compliance. ^[1]

The committee also approves a development variance permit to reduce required subdivision lot width-to-depth ratios for two proposed lots, and requests a report on subdivision potential and density issues connected to the application. ^[1]
