BC Ferries president and CEO Mark Collins came to Denman on Tuesday, August 20, to discuss plastic strips from the Baynes Sound Connector cable and join a shoreline cleanup with a team of twenty BC Ferries volunteers.[1]

The Denman Island Ferry Advisory Committee hosted the meeting at the Denman Activity Centre. The newsletter reported that the plastic had spread around Denman and Hornby and down Baynes Sound.[1]

Collins said the cable delaminated because of an additive in its plastic covering. BC Ferries suspected a product defect and was pursuing the manufacturer, the newsletter reported.[1]

The meeting also discussed possible support for future beach cleanups, including boats to help reach harder-to-access shore areas. Collins reaffirmed BC Ferries’ support for the annual cleanup, according to the newsletter.[1]
