An article in The Islands Grapevine reports that conservation groups, including the Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards, are calling for an immediate closure of the Strait of Georgia herring fishery.[1]
The article says federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans data put the population biomass at 85,700 tonnes in 2019, down from approximately 129,500 metric tonnes in 2016, and forecast 54,242 tonnes in 2020.[1]
It reports that the groups are calling for a Pacific Herring Recovery Program and says they planned to co-host a forum on November 7 with the WSÁNEĆ Leadership Council.[1]
