Housing petition prompts Denman Trust response

The Local Trust Committee says a pause on enforcement that could prompt evictions remains in place while it considers a housing-rules review.

The Denman Island Local Trust Committee says a pause on bylaw enforcement that would prompt evictions has been in effect since spring 2020 and will remain until the public health order is lifted.^[1]

In a response published in the April 1 Grapevine, the committee said it confirmed the pause in a standing resolution at its March 16 meeting. It also said a partial moratorium, with exceptions, has been in effect on Denman since June 2019.^[1]

The committee said it did not issue eviction notices or request evictions in 2020 or in 2021 up to the date of its response. It reported two enforcement files in 2020 that referred to alleged illegal housing, with communication with property owners about timelines and compliance options.^[1]

The response acknowledged a petition asking for a full moratorium and reviews of the Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw. The committee said it supports a targeted review of housing regulations, but available staff resources are directed to affordable-housing applications.^[1]

The March 16 minutes record a presentation of a petition signed by over 600 residents; the Grapevine response says it received a petition with 541 signatories on March 16.^[2][1]
