Housing and bylaw enforcement were among the concerns raised at the Denman Island Local Trust Committee’s March 22 meeting, where about twenty-five members of the public attended. The minutes record requests to review housing restrictions and to stop enforcement against non-permitted housing; they do not record a decision on those requests.[1]
At the meeting, a delegate said she believed Islands Trust policies, staff and procedures violated her human rights by deeming her home unlawful. She asked for a moratorium on enforcement against unlawful housing and for an ongoing process to involve renters and rights-holders in addressing housing needs.[1]
Letters in the April 7 Grapevine also presented opposing views on wood burning. A letter signed by Donna Millen argued that burning wood releases carbon and that wood stoves emit fine particles; it cited studies and reports in support of those claims.[2]
A separate letter, whose writer is not identified in the supplied text, described properly seasoned wood as renewable energy and argued that a masonry heater burns off creosote and other compounds. The letters make competing claims; the documents provided do not establish which claims are correct.[2]
