The Denman Island Sponsorship Group said one of the two Afghan sisters it was helping bring to Canada is no longer coming to Denman, while her sister remains eager to come.[1]
The group said the remaining applicant’s paperwork had been submitted and estimated her arrival could be six to 18 months away, as the Canadian government processes refugee cases.[1]
The group reported that islanders and friends had contributed $31,000 in eight months and said it expected to reach the minimum $32,500 needed to support one person for a year after proceeds from a quilt raffle and art sale.[1]
A wildlife prints and paintings sale was scheduled for August 6 and 7 at the Arts Centre, and the first quilt raffle draw was scheduled for August 6 at the farmers’ market.[1]
