The Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards is urging public comments on an application to change infrastructure at an existing shellfish lease near Tsable River, between Buckley Bay and Fanny Bay.[1]

The group’s notice gives February 18, 2023, as the comment deadline and describes the application as involving geoduck aquaculture using PVC tubes.[1]

In its January 24 letter, the association recommends that the application be considered after an area-based shellfish aquaculture management plan is developed, and recommends denying the request to culture geoduck in PVC tubes.[1]

The association’s letter raises concerns about pollution, plastic debris and wildlife entanglement. Those are the group’s claims; the newsletter does not include a response from the applicant or the responsible ministry.[1]
