Housing was the focus of several presentations to the Denman Island Local Trust Committee at its February 7 meeting, where about twenty-five members of the public were present.[1]

Virginia Spinney, presenting for the Denman Island Housing Action Group, outlined housing needs and barriers and suggested changes to the Official Community Plan, land-use rules, enforcement practices and approval processes.[1]

Representatives of Triple Rock Land Cooperative described exploring options to add five units, bringing the total to 20, and to allow secondary suites in all units. Staff said an Official Community Plan review typically takes multiple years, while a rezoning application might take at least 12-18 months once complete.[1]

Erin O’Brien-Hornsey presented a report on housing needs related to preventing violence against rural women and supporting economic independence. She proposed a local action committee and a review of the Official Community Plan’s Density Bank.[1]
