Denman housing groups raise needs and options at Trust meeting

Housing needs and possible changes to land-use rules were among the subjects raised by presenters at the Denman Island Local Trust Committee’s Feb. 7 meeting, according to the adopted minutes.[1]

Virginia Spinney, presenting for the Denman Island Housing Action Group, outlined housing needs and barriers and suggested changes to the Official Community Plan, Land Use Bylaw, enforcement practices and approval processes.[1]

A representative of Triple Rock Land Cooperative said the cooperative was exploring five additional units, secondary suites in all units and changes to accessory-building rules, with the aim of providing housing for islanders and increasing diversity.[1]

Staff estimated that an Official Community Plan review typically takes multiple years, while a rezoning application might take at least 12 to 18 months once complete, the minutes said.[1]

A Denman Island Women’s Outreach presenter identified a need for affordable, safe, year-round local housing and proposed a local action committee, a review of the OCP Density Bank and a study of existing approaches.[1]
