Denman trustees choose a slower housing-planning process

The Local Trust Committee does not support an expedited application process and asks staff to prepare documents for its Housing Advisory Planning Commission.

The Denman Island Local Trust Committee does not support an expedited process for a potential Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation funding application, citing the need for thorough community and Housing Advisory Planning Commission consultation. [1] Staff are asked to continue with the basic housing-review process. [1]

The committee is beginning a Housing Review Project examining bylaws and housing options. [1] Staff are expected to prepare a report on a forthcoming referral to the Housing Advisory Planning Commission for review at the next Local Trust Committee meeting. [1]

The committee appointed Judy Armstrong, Richard Day, Karla Neufer, Riane da Silva, Pamela Willis, Virginia Spinney and Rosa Telegus to the Denman Island Housing Advisory Planning Commission, with terms commencing immediately and ending April 25, 2025. [1]

Staff are asked to provide the commission members with the Official Community Plan, Land Use Bylaw and Housing Review. [1] The committee also asks staff to provide hard copies of the Denman Island Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaws to the Local Trustees. [1]

    Concern was expressed with the short timeline for the proposed application process. The expedited application process was not supported as the need for adequate, thorough community and HAPC consultation, and the importance of careful consideration at a pace that works for the community was recognized.
