A disagreement over proposed changes to the Bylaw Enforcement Notification bylaw surfaced in Denman Island public comments and letters in the June 1 issue of The Islands Grapevine.[1]

In comments recorded at its April 4 meeting, the Local Trust Committee said a member of the public objected that the system could enforce housing regulations under review and might contravene the human right to adequate housing. The Denman Island Housing Action Group asked the committee to refer the proposed amendments to its Housing Advisory Planning Commission.[2]

The minutes also record Laura Thomson objecting to bylaw enforcement staff imposing fines when access without notice is refused. She asked the committee not to grant enforcement staff more power or introduce additional fines.[2]

The April 25 special-meeting minutes say the committee appointed members to the Housing Advisory Planning Commission and anticipated a staff report on a forthcoming referral at its next meeting. They do not record a decision on the proposed enforcement amendments.[3]
