Denman trustees seek study of ferry route bypassing Denman

The Local Trust Committee asks for a letter and a joint meeting on ferry transportation to the islands.

The Denman Island Local Trust Committee asks staff to schedule a joint meeting with the Hornby Island Local Trust Committee about ferry transportation to the islands, and asks the chair to write to transportation officials about examining a ferry from Vancouver Island to Hornby Island that does not cross Denman. ^[1]

The motions follow a presentation about cross-island ferry traffic, including speeding, congestion and effects on people walking and cycling on Denman roads. ^[1]

The committee’s letter is to go to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the chief executive officer of BC Ferries, the regional district director and the MLA. ^[1]

Public comments also raised concerns about traffic at the Denman West ferry terminal, the absence of promised flaggers in the village and a proposed replacement of the cable ferry with a vessel carrying more vehicles. ^[1]

The committee also discussed the Official Community Plan’s marine transportation policies, including maintaining ferry service at existing levels and avoiding larger land-based facilities and larger vessels to respond to seasonal peaks. ^[1]
