The Nature Trust of British Columbia has launched a campaign to raise $1 million to purchase and protect 38.7 hectares of mature Coastal Douglas-fir forest on Denman Island. The organization said the funds must be raised by the end of 2023.[1]

The proposed purchase area is next to the Denman Conservancy Association’s Central Park conservation area and Denman Island Provincial Park and Protected Area. The Nature Trust said the combined conservation area would cover 187 hectares if the purchase goes ahead.[1]

The release describes forests, wetlands and open areas, including a riparian corridor along Beadnell Creek. It says the area provides habitat for at-risk species, including Taylor’s Checkerspot butterfly, and that ten bird species listed under the federal Species at Risk Act have been seen on or near the property.[1]

The Nature Trust invited the public to donate to the campaign. The release says the organization has been given the opportunity to purchase the land; it does not say the purchase is complete.[1]
