Volunteers cleaned purple martin nest boxes at Denman’s Community Dock and replaced older boxes with new ones, according to a report in this week’s Grapevine.[1]
The Purple Martin Preservation Team built 24 new nest boxes to replace those on the floating dock and gangway of the Community Dock, the report said.[1]
Volunteers also mounted eight boxes on pilings that BC Ferries replaced during work on the Denman West landing facility.[1]
The report said the nest material should be replaced annually and the boxes sprayed with a bleach solution while the birds are away for the winter.[1]
