The Comox Valley Regional District apologized on October 29 for damage to registered and unregistered K’ómoks Cultural Heritage Sites during construction of the Denman Cross Island Trail. The district said the damage occurred in fall 2023 and that proper procedures could have prevented it.[1]

The CVRD said it had worked with K’ómoks First Nation through a restorative justice process to investigate the site and identify remedial actions. It said the actions include offsetting K’ómoks staff costs related to the incident and donating toward the Nation’s repatriation priorities.[1]

The district also committed to improving internal procedures and providing staff education about the K’ómoks Cultural Heritage Policy permitting process.[1]
