Housing proposal draws differing views at Denman trust meeting

A proposed housing co-op at 5400 Northwest Road was discussed at the Denman Island Local Trust Committee’s July 15 meeting, with the delegation seeking pre-zoning for 10 homes in two clusters.^[1]

The delegation said the homes would be owned by a not-for-profit co-op, with members purchasing shares rather than owning property. Its proposal also includes a four-site campground, community garden and common areas, according to the minutes.^[1]

A member of the public raised concerns about pre-zoning before an Official Community Plan update, saying it could limit public input and that housing and density discussions should continue first.^[1]

The minutes record the delegation’s position that the proposal aligns with the Official Community Plan and Denman Housing Action Plan. They also say the Local Trust Committee can consider the proposal within the scope of its current Housing Project.^[1]

The committee requested staff schedule a community engagement session on the housing project in September or October 2025.^[1]
