Concerns Raised Over Fire Hydrant Requirements and Water System Compliance

governance · January 2025 · Graham Lake subdivision, Denman Island

Residents of the Graham Lake subdivision continue to express concerns about the Comox Valley Regional District's (CVRD) compliance with Surface Water Treatment Objectives and fire hydrant requirements. CVRD CEO James Warren stated that fire hydrants are no longer required for subdivisions in BC, a position contested by residents citing recent catastrophic fires such as Pacific Palisades. Questions remain about the status of local fire hydrants, use of capital funds, and water treatment projects.

Our subdivision has a 53 million gallon water reservoir (Graham Lake) which is only available through the existing engineered subdivision fire hydrants... Some service participants ask what happened to our $250,000 capital fund?... Where is the $1.2 million dollars that our elected representative Daniel Arbour secured to solve our water problems?” — The Islands Grapevine – January 23rd, 2025 (January 23rd, 2025)
