Concerns Raised Over Plastic Debris from Oyster Farming

environment · 2021-03-08 · Denman Island beaches and recycling centre

The Marine Guardian Committee of the Denman Residents Association has raised concerns about single-use plastic zap straps and oyster blue ropes washing ashore on Denman Island beaches. These plastics, used in new oyster pouch systems and fencing, break down and pose risks to local wildlife. A garbage bin has been set up at the recycling centre to collect these materials, and the committee is urging oyster industry workers to manage disposal more responsibly.
