Fisheries and Oceans Canada Opens Strait of Georgia Roe Herring Fishery

As of March 4, 2026, Fisheries and Oceans Canada has opened the Strait of Georgia roe herring gill net fishery with a total allowable catch of 5,559 tonnes following recent spawn observations in Areas 14 and 17. The herring fishery has an estimated annual value of $30–40 million in BC, with significant economic importance to marine wildlife and coastal economies.
