HIRRA Composting Toilet Pilot Project Clarified

environment · Denman Island Depot (potential)

The Hornby Island Residents and Ratepayers Association (HIRRA) clarified that their composting toilet project is a pilot to explore interest in a service to transport composted human waste off-island for processing. No tax dollars are currently required, and no decision has been made to use the local depot as a storage site. Funding and community decisions on the project are at least a year away.

  • “The facts, according to HIRRA President Daniel Siegel, are: 1. No tax dollars are required at this point...3. This is a pilot project only to see if those who already have composting toilets or who might install one soon are interested in having a CVRD contractor take their already composted waste to their Cumberland facility for final treatment...5. HIRRA did not decide to use the depot as a way station, nor is that likely to happen.” — The Islands Grapevine – December 8th, 2022 (December 8th, 2022)
