Islands Trust seeks more information on Bowen cidery bylaw

The Executive Committee said the proposed bylaw may conflict with Trust policies on farming, community character and water use.

The Islands Trust Executive Committee will ask Bowen Island Municipality for more information about Bylaw No. 726, including how its cidery definition fits the property’s agricultural use and Rural Residential designation.^[1] The committee also requested confirmation that a 2021 hydrogeologist report considered freshwater supply, cumulative impacts and whether the water sources would affect other users and the watershed.^[1]

The committee advised that Bylaw No. 726 may be contrary to or at variance with policies addressing farming, economic opportunities compatible with conservation and community character.^[1]

The committee discussed statistics on cideries in the Trust Area, uncertainty about proposed covenants, agricultural use and an existing water licence.^[1]

The committee carried the motions on August 26 and forwarded other meeting materials to the September Islands Trust Council quarterly meeting.^[1]
