Swarm Season Begins for Local Honeybee Colonies

environment · May 2021 · Denman Island

As spring progresses, honeybee colonies are growing rapidly and may swarm if they run out of space. Swarming is a natural colony split where a portion of bees leave to find a new home. Beekeepers are advised to inspect hives frequently and add boxes as needed to prevent swarming.

Hive inspections will give you an indication if your hive is in need of more room and adding boxes (supers) as needed- giving your queen more room to lay and reducing their desire to swarm.” — The Islands Grapevine – May 27th, 2021 (May 27th, 2021)
