Cigarette litter linked to fires and wildfire penalties

The newsletter reported that discarded cigarettes caused brush and mulch fires on southern Vancouver Island and that two drivers were each fined $575 for dropping burning cigarettes. BC Wildfire Service warned that people may be liable for firefighting costs and damages if discarded smoking materials cause wildfires.
