Cigarette-related wildfire fines issued on Vancouver Island

The newsletter reported that discarded cigarette butts had caused brush and mulch fires on southern Vancouver Island and that two drivers were each ticketed $575 under the Wildfire Act for discarding burning cigarettes. BC Wildfire Service warned that people may be liable for firefighting costs and damages if their discarded cigarettes cause or contribute to a wildfire.
