Closure of the Free Shack at Elkhaven and Community Reflections
community · Elkhaven
The Free Shack at Elkhaven has closed following the curator's departure, prompting community reflections on its legacy and the suggestion to let it end with dignity. The Free Shack was a popular community resource but faced challenges including misuse and conflicts.
This is the archive, not the newspaper. Between 2018 and 2026 this site compiled these items automatically from public community sources — chiefly The Islands Grapevine, regional news feeds and community groups. They were not written by a reporter and were not held to the standards this publication now applies. The archive is kept because it is a useful dated record of what happened on Denman, and it is labelled because pretending otherwise would be the first thing we would tell you not to trust. Current reporting is at The Denman Firestarter.

- “One didn't have to be Nostradamus to see that the Free Shack was doomed the moment it got the heave-ho from Elkhaven and its curator hung up his uniform... To keep this going is inherently cruel and without purpose... We are already blessed with a Free Store that is the envy of the world.” — The Islands Grapevine – January 8th, 2026 (January 8th, 2026)
