The Denman Island Farmers Institute was organized in 1915 to coordinate the purchase of feed, fertilizer, grain, and grass. Sheep herding was popular on the island, peaking in 1929 with about 1,000 sheep. Early settlers established orchards and dairy farming, contributing to the island's agricultural history.
