Denman Island Internet Infrastructure Project by CityWest

infrastructure · 2023 · Denman Island

CityWest is installing a fibre optic network throughout Denman Island to provide internet, telephone, and television services. The project includes underground fibre installations along most roads, with distribution boxes near driveways and connections to subscriber homes. The network is connected to the Connected Coast subsea trunk cable, but service activation is delayed due to pending authorization from the City of Vancouver for the trunk connection. CityWest has faced installation challenges and budget overruns, and is seeking supplemental provincial grants to complete the project.

This is the archive, not the newspaper. Between 2018 and 2026 this site compiled these items automatically from public community sources — chiefly The Islands Grapevine, regional news feeds and community groups. They were not written by a reporter and were not held to the standards this publication now applies. The archive is kept because it is a useful dated record of what happened on Denman, and it is labelled because pretending otherwise would be the first thing we would tell you not to trust. Current reporting is at The Denman Firestarter.

  • “CityWest is installing fibre optic cabling throughout Denman Island and will offer internet, telephone and television services. Its network is almost ready to serve customers... The "Connected Coast" backhaul trunk cannot begin operating until it is connected with a distribution terminal a few blocks from where the trunk cable comes ashore in downtown Vancouver. This connection must be authorized in detail by the City of Vancouver, and this was applied for over a year ago.” — The Islands Grapevine – August 3rd, 2023 (August 3rd, 2023)
