Local Resident Ed Phelan Completes Arctic Boat Journey

community · June 10 to October 5, 2019 · Mackenzie River to Tuktoyaktuk, Arctic Ocean

Long-time Denman resident Ed Phelan restored a historic clinker-built fishing boat and undertook a 1100-mile journey down the Mackenzie River from Slave Lake to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean in June 2019. After leaving the boat on the beach in Tuktoyaktuk, he returned in September 2019 to retrieve it and bring it back to Denman Island for restoration.

This is the archive, not the newspaper. Between 2018 and 2026 this site compiled these items automatically from public community sources — chiefly The Islands Grapevine, regional news feeds and community groups. They were not written by a reporter and were not held to the standards this publication now applies. The archive is kept because it is a useful dated record of what happened on Denman, and it is labelled because pretending otherwise would be the first thing we would tell you not to trust. Current reporting is at The Denman Firestarter.
