Strait of Georgia Herring Population Decline and Fishery Quotas

New data from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) shows a nearly 60% decline in herring biomass in the Strait of Georgia from 2016 to 2020. Conservation groups and First Nations call for immediate fishery closure and a recovery program. DFO released commercial fishery plans with recommended quotas for 2020 and is discussing total harvest levels with stakeholders.
